SNIP House
A Nonprofit Spay/Neuter Clinic

The Spay Neuter Investment Project, Inc.  (S.N.I.P.)  came into existence in Nov. 2003 because of concerns over the number of animals being killed in Our Humane Societiy of the Ochocos and elsewhere.  We decided to try to diminish  the problem of pet overpopulation in Crook County by creating a private, nonprofit corporation to support the spay/neuter effort.

We were lucky enough to find a veterinarian in Bend, Rebecca Henry DVM, who shared our concern for the animals, had special training and experience with spay/neuter and was willing to provide a veterinary practice limited to low cost spay and neuter.  Now that Dr. Henry has moved to Kansas with her husband, we were thrilled to have the equally dedicated Byron Maas DVM.  Our current vet, Dr. Angie Kemper DVM (formerly Dr. Angie Strout DVM) combines the dedication and skill of our previous vets with additional training in acupuncture and herbal medicine -- fantastic!

In addition to the community support, especially the police who have to deal with the consequences of pet overpopulation, many of the veterinarians are encouraging and helpful.  They recognize that it takes a nonprofit entity with outside financial support, a donated facility and (with the exception of the vet. and tech.) a totally volunteer staff to make this low cost service available for many animals that otherwise would not be done.

Our surgery, recovery monitoring, anesthetics and pain management are state of the art.  Costs are not cut when it comes to the safety and comfort of our patients.   The facility is clean, modern and efficient thanks to the business community who donated time, materials and labor.  Especially generous were Russ McAdams of LH Morris, SMAF construction, ABC fence, Prineville Heating and Cooling, Hap Taylor and Sons, David Evans & Associates, Earl Hendrix masonry, Sunwest Construction, Stusser electric, Woodward Companies, Ochoco Feed, Brian and Laura Barney, and our attorney, Greg Lynch of Miller Nash LLP.
